The flu season can begin as early as October and last as long as May. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) explains that everyone over the age of 6 months old should receive a FLU vaccine every year.
Why do I need the flu vaccine every year?
A flu vaccine is needed every season for two reasons. First, the body's immune response gets lower after time, so an annual vaccine is needed for the best protection and to keep the immune response strong. Second, because the flu viruses are always changing, the flu vaccination is always changing, too.
Where can I go to get the flu shot?
Your primary care provider or local clinic. The Cudahy Health Department has flu shots to available to the community at the following rates:
- Children (under 18) with State Insurance/Medicaid: $0
- All Adults or Children with Private Insurance: $35
Signs and symptoms of flu:
People who have the flu often feel some or all of these signs and symptoms:
- Fever* or feeling feverish/chills
- Sore throat
- Runny or stuffy nose
- Muscle or body aches
- Fatigue (very tired)
- Some people may have vomiting and diarrhea, though this is more common in children than adults.
*It’s important to note that not everyone with flu will have a fever.
