Radon Testing

Does your home have high levels of Radon?

Radon is a radioactive gas released from the normal decay of uranium that is commonly found in the soil. It is an invisible, odorless, tasteless gas that can seep through a crack or hole in a buildings foundation and accumulate in a home. Radon decays quickly, giving off tiny radioactive particles. When inhaled, these radioactive particles can damage the cells that line a person's lungs. Long-term exposure can lead to lung cancer.

The Cudahy Health Department has a limited supply of Radon Test Kits, which are available free to Cudahy Residents.

For more information, please call the Health Department @ 414-769-2239.

Child Passenger Safety Seat Program

Is your child properly restrained in his or her child safety seat?  Is the seat correctly installed? More than 80% of child safety seats are installed or used incorrectly.

The Cudahy Health Department offers free child safety seat (car seat) inspections by appointment. The child safety seat inspections are performed by a certified child passenger safety technician. The technician looks at how the seat is installed and how the child is restrained in the seat. He or she will assist the parent or caregiver with the proper installation of the seat, as well as how to properly restrain the child in the child safety seat.

The Child Passenger Safety Program has new child safety seats available for low income Cudahy residents (donations for the child safety seat are encouraged to help maintain our program).

To schedule an appointment, please call the Health Department @ 414-769-2239.

Bicycle Helmets

The use of a properly fitting bike helmet helps to protect a child from serious head injuries in the event of a fall or a crash. The helmet should be the correct size for the child, fit snugly when strapped and the straps should form a "V" just below each ear. The helmet should sit 1 to 2 fingers above the child's eyebrows.

For more information about bike helmet safety, visit Safe Kids Southeast Wisconsin.

Pedestrian Safety

Each year, the Cudahy Health Department, the Safe Kid's Coalition of Southeastern Wisconsin and the Cudahy School District provide education about pedestrian safety to the children enrolled in our five elementary schools. The highlight of the program is the annual "Walk Your Child to School Day", which is typically held on the first Wednesday in October.

During the weeks prior to the walk, the children attend an educational session that demonstrates the proper way to cross the street as well as how to walk on the road when there are no sidewalks present. These messages are reinforced in the classroom as well.

Parents and family members are encouraged to walk to school with their children on the day of the walk.

For further information, contact your child's school or the Cudahy Health Department.    You can also visit Safe Kids Southeast Wisconsin.

Sharps Disposal

Sharps Disposal is available for all Cudahy residents who use syringes or blood testing equipment in their homes.  Sharps must be placed in a rigid, puncture-proof container such as a laundry detergent bottle with a secure lid.  A biohazard label should be placed on the outside of the container.  Sharps can be brought to the Cudahy Health Department during normal business hours for free disposal. Proof of residency required.
